Rescaling of Energy Labels: Are We Not Missing the Point?

Eurofuel warns against an overall rescaling of energy labels, which would not be appropriate for all product groups and would actually jeopardise the Energy Labelling Directive’s objective of promoting energy efficiency in purchasing decisions. For space and water heaters, many technologies are subject to the same labelling scheme. If an energy-specific label is not introduced, the rescaling of energy labels would result for certain technologies in deterring consumers from upgrading their heating systems. “How could a consumer be incentivised to modernise their equipment, which can reduce their energy use by 40% or more, if the most efficient boiler he can find carries a C or a D?”, said Jeremy Hawksley, President of Eurofuel.
